How to Start Organizing your Home - One Step at a Time

The lazy days of summer affect everyone, even the most motivated. The best approach is to look ahead at the sense of accomplishment you'll have when your organizing goal is completed. Now is the time to think about back to school shopping or about those items you've been wanting to buy with the summer sales.

Pick ONE closet that is causing you the most grief and start there.  It is a mistake to take on too much at one time, become overwhelmed, and never finishing what you've started. It could be a child's closet because they may be out of school and moving many items on a daily basis, causing the closet to get messy and detract from the looks of the room.

It's easy when you think of the satisfaction you will have when done!  Here we go…….

Bring in a bag or box for those things you're going to donate to friends or community, because the child doesn't use or fit into them any more.

If you have other children you are planning on saving them for, make sure they are clean and pack them in a plastic container(s) and label them with the size(s) of clothes it contains.  Plastic containers, such as Sterilite or Rubbermaid are perfect for this task.

Your excitement and attitude will definitely affect your child.  Let them know you are helping someone else and that they have "grown so much" that we need to get things organized for the new clothes we'll be buying (even if it's a few items)!

This may take a few sessions, but reward the child with a little something, like watching their favorite movie, if they will try on a certain number of items to see how they still fit.  If you are excited and make a game out of it, you can stretch their patience. This even works with teenagers if you offer the right reward!

Take EVERYTHING out of the closet. Clean or paint the shelves and vacuum or clean the carpet/tile. When you have to actually touch those items, you make different decisions!

If your budget allows, try to use plastic hangars or hangars of your choice, that will keep the clothes separated in nice order and you can easily know what you have in the closet. Wire hangars allow everything to become "jammed" in and wrinkled.

Switch garments to new hangars, if you can and desire.  Consider grouping all the same colors together for a certain category of clothes, such as all red T- shirts, etc. When you're done, you will have a rainbow in your closet!  Hang up everything you can , except underwear and socks, because this keeps all the mess out of the drawers and keep the garments from being wrinkled. T-shirts folded in a drawer last about a half a day before they are all unfolded and wrinkled!

Place the clothes that are seldom worn to the back  or far sides of the closet and the most selected ones to the center or front.

Gather up all toys and use (deco) baskets or plastic containers to categorize toys, such as all action figures in one basket.  The see-through plastic containers are great because the child/mom can see what is stored in them.  If you choose baskets, you can stick a picture / words to the front side, so the child knows what is in them without moving them.

Place all the containers/baskets/games on shelves in one section of the closet.  It is perfect if you can use the floor space for shoes only, or even more perfect, if the child/mom have an easily accessible shoe organizer hanging on the end of the closet rod for shoes, belts, etc.

It is so much easier for the closet to stay neat if everything has a place that they will not get easily shifted around. If you have big toys, such as a doll house, you can place those on the far right and left sides and the closet will still be organized.

Keep the closet organized by talking with your child about putting toys and games back when they are done playing. When a clean garment is hung back in, it can be hung on the right of the same colored items in the like category, such as a red T - shirt hung on the right of all the red T- shirts! This technique will also give the clue of what has been worn most recently.

You've done it! Wasn't that easy? The closet looks great and you're ready for shopping and you feel great.  You're free to begin the next closet when energy and time permit.
